This was the first meeting between the two teams since the memorable Champions League final 1999 where Manchester United scored twice in the last minutes to win 2-1 and lift the trophy with the big ears.
Solskjaer was one of the main protagonists in that final. The Norwegian was the match winner with United’s second goal in injury time which secured them a legendary victory.
Solskjaer came to United i 1996 from Norwegian side Molde. Throughout his time at United he was mostly known for his ability to change the game coming on from the bench. In spite of his frequent role as a super sub, he managed to score 18 goals in his first season. He went on to make 366 appearances for Manchester United scoring 126 times.
After his playing career he went on to manage Manchester United’s reserves before taking charge of Molde. After a brief spell with Cardiff he returned to Molde. Then came the opportunity of a lifetime, when Solskjaer took charge on Manchester United in 2018. He was in the job for three years making him one of the more lasting successors to Sir Alex Ferguson.
He led Manchester United to a Europa League final in 2020/21. However, they ended up losing to Villareal after a dramatic penalty shootout.
