Matchworn Steven Gerrard Liverpool debut season 1998/99!
No way! This shirt comes as matchworn from various games and was given to the previous owner in the latter part of the 1998/99 season (1999) as a gift directly from Steven Gerrard after a Premier League match. It is a great and rare shirt for any respectable collector as Gerrard only featured for Liverpool 13 times in his debut season 1998/99!
Gerrard made his Liverpool first-team debut on 29 November 1998 in a Premier League match against Blackburn as a last-minute substitute for Vegard Heggem. He made thirteen appearances in his debut season, filling in for injured captain Jamie Redknapp in centre-midfield. He also occasionally played on the right wing, but he scarcely contributed in the short on-pitch time he received, due to nervousness affecting his play.
“I was out of position and out of my depth.” Gerrard saw himself as a defensive player primarily, looking to make key tackles rather than push the team forward. Now we all know better – what a player captaining both club and country and what a historic matchworn shirt this is!
Steven Gerrard went on to make 504 appearances for Liverpool, and scoring 120 goals.
