In the group was also Bulgaria and Romania. They next faced hosts England in the quarter finals and lost 5-6 on penalties. At Euro 1996 Donato da Silva only played a total 8 minutes which occurred as a substitute in the opening game vs Bulgaria. Injuries was not on his side for this tournament and therefore it was harder to get selected even when he was fit to play again.

Donato da Silva Gama was a tenaciously strong defensive midfielder who grew up in Brazil. He played his football for America and Vasco da Gama before he was snatched up by Atletico de Madrid. He moved from Brazil to Spain in 1988 and stayed for 5 years with Atletico de Madrid. Next he went to Deportivo La Coruna alongside other Brazilian stars like Bebeto and Mauro Silva where he stayed for 10 years and still lives today.

He would become a Spanish citizen in early 1990’s and therefore eligible to participate for the Spanish national team. He was called up for the first time by Javier Clemente for the Euro 1996 qualifying match against Denmark. Spain won 3-0 and Donato also scored on his debut, in fact he scored in his first three games for Spain, becoming a lucky charm. He represented Spain 12 times and scored 3 goals.
